'Sapele', a preferred choice of timer

Sapele Timber is a West African hardwood, is known for its reddish-brown color, strength, and stability, often used as a substitute for mahogany in furniture, flooring, and joinery applications.

Key Characteristics of Sapele Timber:
Origin: West Africa, specifically from Sierra Leone down to Angola.

Appearance:
Rich, reddish-brown color, often compared to mahogany.
Distinctive ribbon-like figure caused by interlocking grain, especially when quarter-sawn.
The sapwood is pale yellow or whitish, while the heartwood is pinkish when freshly cut, darkening to a typical mahogany color.

Properties:
Highly resistant wood with high tolerance against indentation, bending, and shock resistance.
It’s density and hardness make it stable and predictable as a timber product.

Other Names:
Sapelli, sapeli mahogany, aboudikro, assi, muyovu.

Latin Name:
Entandrophragma cylindricum.

Sustainability:
Sapele is often sourced from well-managed forests.

Durability:
Sapele is moderately durable to very durable regarding decay resistance and has moderate insect/borer resistance.
